Rabbit Insurance

Having a pet rabbit is a big responsibility–almost like having a child. Pet owners want to provide the best possible care, but with rising vet fees, it is hard to set aside enough money to pay for an unexpected illness or injury. Rabbit insurance takes away this worry. By paying a modest monthly premium, you know that you will be able to afford veterinary care and other major pet care costs.

Rabbit Insurance Covers High Veterinary Costs

A rabbit policy will assist you with a wide range of veterinarian costs, including fees, medications, ointments, diagnostic tests, hospitalizations, and surgery. You can also purchase cover for complementary therapies offered by your veterinarian–such as massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic treatments.

You Can Choose a Life or Time-Limited Plan

The two basic types of health cover are life and time-limited plans. As long as you faithfully pay premiums, a life plan will insure your rabbit for its whole life. A time-limited plan is less expensive, as each illness is covered for a limited period, such as 12 months. Under both types of plans, payouts for each ailment or injury in a twelve-month period can range from £2,000 to £3,000.

How to Select the Right Level of Cover

When choosing a level of cover for health costs, you’ll want to think about your budget and your rabbit’s health requirements. To limit your premium cost, choose a time-limited policy, with less than 100% coverage, and a high excess–the excess is the amount of a bill that you pay before the insurance starts. For example, if the vet bill is £100 and the excess is £40, the cover will apply to £60. With 90% cover your benefit will be £54.

When you select cover level you will also want to consider whether the insurance will provide enough protection. Your veterinarian may be able to give advice as to your rabbit’s health prospects, based on experience. Age is an important consideration. As your rabbit ages, the possibility of a long-term, chronic condition increases.

Your cover level decision is time sensitive. Try to choose a strategy when your rabbit is young. Policies do not cover pre-existing conditions, so it is important to have purchased insurance well before an illness occurs. Once you have a policy, making a claim for vet fees will not cause your premium to go up. Timing is particularly important for life plans–as your rabbit will not be eligible after a certain age–usually age 5.

Pet Insurance for Rabbits Has Many Features

With the growing popularity of rabbit pet insurance plans, insurers are fine-tuning policy packages. There are a variety of options to suit different requirements. Beyond basic health insurance, a policy can provide for:

  • Boarding your pet in a licensed rabbit hotel, should you go into hospital;
  • Advertising and offering a reward if your pet goes missing;
  • Travelling abroad with your pet; and
  • A lump sum death benefit in the event of accidental death.

Once you decide to buy a pet insurance plan, you can apply over the phone or online. Often you can get a discount when you sign-up online, and discounts are available if you enrol two or more rabbits. When the policy comes into effect in a few weeks, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that your rabbit insurance will protect you from high, unexpected costs.
